Transnational Law Program - Application

To All Members of the Incoming WU Law Class of 2012:

The WU Law Faculty Advisory Committee of the Transnational Law Program (TLP) is pleased to announce that the TLP is now accepting applications from the incoming J.D. Class of 2012 for its third entering class.

The TLP is a four-year integrated course of study jointly offered by Washington University School of Law and Utrecht University in The Netherlands, in association with three other European law schools: Queen’s University Belfast in the United Kingdom, the University of Trento in Italy, and Universidade Catolica Portuguesa in Portugal.  U.S. participants will be drawn from WU Law admitted students. European students will apply through our European partners.

TLP is unique. No other U.S. law school currently offers a comparable program specifically designed to prepare graduates to practice twenty-first century law in a transnational environment. Preliminary discussions by WU and our European partners with law firms and other legal agencies engaged in transnational law have generated enthusiastic support for the concept

In 2008-9, the TLP admitted its first two classes, from the J.D. Classes of 2010 and 2011.  The charter class will travel to Utrecht for their exchange semester in the Spring of 2010.

Participants will attend WU Law for their first five semesters and then attend University of Utrecht for their final three semesters. (Students may be permitted to spend one of their last three semesters at one of our other European partners.)  U.S. graduates of the TLP will receive a Juris Doctor degree from Washington University, a Masters degree (LL. M.) from University of Utrecht and a TLP Diploma jointly awarded by the participating schools.

Applicants must complete the enclosed four-page TLP application form, which includes a release allowing the TLP Admissions Committee to review your WU Law school application.  The deadline for applications is May 1, 2009.

The Committee will review applications on a rolling basis and notify applicants as decisions are made.  The Committee may request that applicants who claim proficiency in a foreign language provide additional proof of language proficiency or submit to an appropriate oral or written examination to demonstrate ability.

We have prepared an FAQ (click here) to respond to questions commonly asked about the program. If you have other questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of us (ellis@wulaw.wustl.edu) or (mpeil@wulaw.wustl.edu).

Sincerely yours,
